I enjoy history, especially if it is something I can relate to. However, do we really need to study church history? Church history just didn’t strike me as interesting or something I needed to teach my kids. I’m not Catholic or Lutheran, so why would I spend time studding the history of those religions. Now that’s just foolishness! Yet those are the types of things that crossed my mind when I thought about the Reformation. This book changed those thought processes. I had no idea. The church, in the time period before the Reformation, followed sinful, if not downright evil practices. The book When Lightning Struck!: The Story of Martin Luther didn’t just teach me history, it made it come alive! It didn’t give me facts about Martin Luther, but gave me a glimpse into his thoughts.
Danika Cooley delivers a story packed with excitement and conveys facts through the story in a way that does not feel like a list of dates or events. Incredibly well researched, her book recounts history in an enjoyable and engaging manner. This book can easily be used in a curriculum with the FREE downloadable guide and 12 week study unit. Don’t forget to check out her other Bible curriculum as well.
Description of When Lightning Struck!
Martin Luther’s life was too exciting not to be written for teens and younger readers! In this fast-paced, action-packed novel of Martin Luther’s life, teen readers (and more than a few adults!) will be introduced to a fascinating time when princes ruled Europe and knights roamed the countryside. They’ll learn about a time when powerful forces lined up against each other and believing the wrong thing could get you killed.
When Lightning Struck! is far more than just an adventure story, of course. It also tells a theological story. Drawing carefully from Luther’s own words, this book introduces readers to a kindred spirit who struggled with what knowing God through Scripture means for daily life. They will understand what was at stake and how powerfully liberating Luther’s idea of grace through faith was—in his time and in ours!
In crisp, enjoyable prose, author Danika Cooley conveys both the drama and the meaning of the Reformation for younger readers like no one before her!
I was given a copy of this book to read in exchange for my honest opinion of the book. (disclaimer) Sheepishly, I must admit that I enjoyed this book much more than I anticipated. More than that, I was reminded of a key lesson. It is one I pray you will hear.
My biggest take-away from the book:
Martin Luther spoke out about the condition of the church. He gave 95 Theses which questioned the church and it’s practices. He changed church history. Martin often spoke about how the church should line up with the Word of God and only the Word of God. Look at your church. (Caution here: Just yours – if you don’t tithe or attend a church, let those who do look examine it.) Does it line up with the Word of God, and only the Word of God? Does it preach salvation based on grace and not works? Does every single aspect bring glory to God and honor the truths presented in the Bible? Let’s take it a step further… what about your heart? It’s time to look at the condition of the church today, but not before looking at the condition of your heart.
