The mid-year slump hit our home hard. So did the flu. I need something easy to implement that is engaging and fun. When I found an on-line study, I wasn’t sure it would be ideal. How can on-line unit studies be hands on? Why use on-line Unit Studies? (See my disclaimer.)
1. On-line CAN be hands-on!
Not all on-line courses or studies are hands on, but Techie Homeschool Mom nailed it. She uses technology to put the learning in the hands of the learner. There are hands-on activities that are easy to implement using a program that allows the kids to create projects on the computer, along with ideas for hands on learning. In the art curriculum, kids create an art gallery using emaze and real life art projects for kids to creating at home! In the new Ancient Greece unit, a travel journal is created on the computer, as well as pottery you make at home.
2. Unit Studies are Engaging and Fun!
Unit studies are broken into bite size reading sections along with videos and fun quizzes. When I pull out a textbook, I hear groans. When I pull out the computer and click on the unit study, learning doesn’t feel like too much work.
3. Perfect for Struggling Learners!
Because the reading sections are in smaller portions, it is not overwhelming for struggling learners. The videos give auditory and visual representation of the information which is easier for many students than reading alone. They don’t see all of the information at once, like in a textbook, but it unfolds one module at a time. That takes a lot of the anxiety away.
Here is a sneak peak into an on-line unit study:
4. Independence in learning.
If your child can read the material and navigate the internet, they can do the unit study. All the parent needs to do is provide the materials for the hands on activities and be available to answer any questions. However, I’m finding that I enjoy the material and have fun learning it right along with my daughter!
Not all unit studies are created equal. Check out a unit study before you buy it. I’m really enjoying the studies from Techie Homeschool Mom. She creates on-line unit studies that are hands-on, easy to implement, and engaging. And there is usually a study for discount or for free!
